Health Indicators: Daily Monitoring For Wellness 2.0

Optimizing whole-person wellness means regularly tracking a variety of components using advances in digital health. As a result, monitoring health indicators became one of the driving forces behind a new wellness program by Why The Health Not?™. Importantly, our vision is giving patients the capability to map individual wellness one day at a time, guided by our 6 Pillars of Wellness. Ultimately, this will bridge important gaps between “on the record” medical evaluations, resulting in a shift away from “sick care” to true healthcare.

Why Tracking Health Indicators Is Important

Since traditional healthcare typically covers in-depth physical check-ups by a doctor only once or twice a year, months of undocumented time goes by in between visits. As a result, conditions may develop and worsen without conscious awareness. This is the downside of how we’re trained to monitor health indicators in our current system; the epitome of “sick-care.” Therefore, WTHN is taking a different approach to wellness. Here’s a brief overview of our vision. Think of it as Wellness 2.0.

What Works For Olympic Athletes Will Work For You

First of all, track your healthcare needs with a virtual, customized diary. It could make a vital difference in treatment and preventative care. Best practices for whole-person wellness means daily monitoring of health indicators. That’s how Olympic athletes reach goals that determine what medal they may win, or if they will get to compete at all. Daily snapshots motivate and give important signals of progress, whether it’s diet, exercise, or another wellness goal.

Gamify Your Goals and Progress

Another important digital health capability is seeing real-time progress so you can achieve your goals. This is one of the biggest drivers behind the development of our new digital health app. And this is what patient-centric preventative care is all about. Progress turns into motivation, a real-time snapshot of what you’re doing right or wrong. Chip away on a daily basis so you can keep on track. Feel the confidence real-time feedback offers. As a result, you’ll stick to your plan with consistent reinforcement, especially if it’s positive. The key to changing your lifestyle behaviors will mean the difference between good or bad health.

With quantifiable metrics that measure and motivate you daily, you have a better chance of success. So gamify your health! It’s the new and innovative way ordinary people, not just Olympians, can incorporate wellness into their daily lives. Add some mojo to what’s most important to you, your health. And let our smartphone app help make this possible. Because WTHN is dedicated to whole-person wellness tracking, with a fun, proactive approach.

Shift Your Focus

Finally, how badly do you want to reach your health and wellness goals? Start by shifting your focus away from the status quo of today. Imagine the best version of yourself tomorrow. Almost all marketers for sports nutrition and weight loss programs find the best psychological motivators are “before” and “after” pictures of progress achieved. Since these visuals are so powerful in shifting focus toward what’s possible, go ahead and join them! Imagine you goals, monitor them daily, and want them badly. This is how you start to make them happen!

WTHN Is  Making Progress

Our vision for a Health Oriented Pairing Engine is making progress everyday. Because total wellness for all people is so important to us. Therefore, we expect our H.O.P.E. app to be ready for a beta launch February 2017. Sign up to be a beta user on our Home page and start treating your body and psyche with all the importance it deserves.

In conclusion, WTHN passionately believes in true healthcare:

A patient-centric, preventative wellness program that pairs users with healthcare providers in a HIPAA-compliant ecosystem spanning whole-person optimization.

Deciphering Emotional Indicators by Why The Health Not?™

Decipher Emotional Indicators, Boost Self-Awareness

Your emotions are speaking to you. Are you listening? It’s easy to overlook one of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of our whole-person wellbeing. The logical patterns of culture and the codes of language shape much of our awareness. Making sense of our core identity isn’t easy when emotional indicators (the little voices in our heads) sometimes come out of left field.

Emotional Indicators Are An Invaluable Resource

Embrace your emotional indicators. The signals from our gut aren’t really fighting against our mental acuity. They’re actually silent helpers looking out for our best interests. Get in touch with your emotions. They’re one of the most important prognosticators of personal health. Start with giving your emotions equal attention with your other daily experiences. Interactions at work, with family—all your decision-making processes, to a certain extent—add to your emotional indicators. And everyone’s emotional language is unique. That’s why it can be so challenging and complex to decipher.

What Are Emotions, Really?
GPS

Emotions are the internal navigation system of our lives. The “feel” of a situation, person, or future choice is the bird’s eye view that predicts clear sailing or a rocky road. Don’t ignore it. Let it guide your decision making. Good choices will boost overall wellness, not deteriorate it with destructive stress.

Voice

How you express yourself depends on your emotional wellbeing. Do you lean toward the positive or the negative? Positive self-expression means your likely more in tune with your emotions. It also means you have a good balance in all six pillars of wellness. But if you’re the naysayer, the pessimist, the whiner, you may have underlying issues in other areas that erodes your self-esteem. Take a hard look at the other pillars of wellness: physical, social, spiritual, financial and intellectual. What improvements can you make in those?

Maestro

Garbage in, garbage out. Your emotions translate and reflect your daily input of experiences. What balance of good and bad do you allow into your personal universe? Filter the input, which directly affects how “well” you are in every aspect of your life. The end result is your “mood,” and that affects your decision making. Choose the notes more carefully as you compose the daily song of your life. You’ll make sweeter music, heard by all around you.

Mentor

Have you ever shifted your beliefs about something or someone because you learned something new? Changing your mind is okay and it happens a lot. When revelations cause a shift in our stance, it proves how strongly emotions are connected to our thoughts, opinions, and beliefs. Ultimately, emotions aren’t just components of our intellectual health. They’re also strong indicators of how we’re feeling physically and spiritually.

Clinician

Emotions speak to our body. Our stomach, bladder, spine, and nervous system reflect our emotional wellness through pain, sensations, or debilitations. On the flip side, our emotions are also dictated by what our bodies are telling us. It’s a cycle of wellness or sickness. Depending on where you are on that spectrum, listening to your emotions could signal a physical issue. Don’t ignore your internal signals when they’re desperately trying to get your attention.

Learn A New Language

Deciphering emotional language can be challenging. But body language is clear if you know what you’re looking for. A study of body language will show how emotions shape what others see. Are you aware of the signals you’re sending? Try an experiment: Watch the body language of everyone you meet during the day. Look for a few of the most obvious signals:

  • Eye Contact: How often are you connecting?
  • Arms: Are they crossed, constantly moving, still?
  • Posture: Slouched, stiff, leaning in or out?
  • Personal Space: Too close or too far away?

Take an assessment of their body language to analyze your own. How do you reflect the above signals? Is your body language giving an accurate reflection of how you really feel or want to be seen by others? What adjustments can you make?

Daily Journey Of Discovery

Add something positive to your daily routine. Shift your focus to decipher your emotional indicators and how your body reflects them. Each new day can offer a new insight. Don’t judge yourself; try to discover yourself. Get in sync to enhance your emotional wellness pillar. As this gets stronger, your other wellness pillars will strengthen.

Finally, keep a daily journal as a guide for progress. As in most things: It’s quite possible you’ll learn something new every day!

Spiritual Wellness by Why The Health Not?

Spiritual Wellness: Expand Your Mind, Fill Your Soul

Spiritual wellness is not only a matter of faith—though we hope you’ll have some faith in the power of this pillar of wellness. Of course, many peg spirituality to religious faith, an opportunity to be part of a large organization of believers. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have spiritual wellness without religion. Faith offers different things to different people. Tolerance and appreciation of these differences is the ultimate in spirituality.

What Defines Your Spiritual Wellness?

That’s a question only you can answer. It’s made up of a number of influences: faith, values, morals, ethics and belonging. Here’s another question: Is your spirituality defined by your faith, or is your faith defined by your spirituality? Here’s a list for a quick self-assessment:

  • What do you value?
  • Can you list your morals?
  • Do you have a set of beliefs?
  • When do you make time for prayer or meditation?
  • Do you display compassion, forgiveness and an ability to love?
  • Are you an active and positive member of your community?
  • Do you care for others unrelated to yourself?
  • Are you able to let go of anger?
  • Is there a higher power that you can turn to for inspiration?

Your answers will help determine your current spiritual wellness. They may also uncover possible goals to strengthen this pillar. Are you interested in learning more about different faiths? Would you be interested in seeking a spiritual leader?

Counsel In Congregation

Spiritual leaders often act as counselors for their congregations. Speaking with a spiritual leader may benefit other pillars of wellness: emotional, social and intellectual. Try seeking out experts in other faiths, or those outside traditional faith-based organizations, in order to expand your spiritual horizon.

Education Doesn’t Challenge Faith

On the contrary, it serves to guide your personal spiritual wellness. Even one of the smartest men of all time, Albert Einstein, said, “science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.” As you follow an educational tangent, look for institutions that are inclusive—not only for you but also for others seeking spiritual wellness.

You’ll find yourself more engaged with your community and thinking more selflessly as you go down this path. You’ll also feel more fulfilled by your positive actions. Guess which pillar this strengthens? Social wellness!

A Gift To Yourself

Charitable acts and helping others boosts your self-worth. Along with prayer or meditation, it can greatly enhance your emotional wellness pillar. The networking and relationships you nurture in your spiritual community may also boost your intellectual, physical and financial pillars. You can see, yet again, the impact one pillar of wellness has on whole-person health. It powers your quality of life!

“Don’t ignore one pillar of wellness in favor of another lest one crumbles and falls out from under you.”Chrissy Larsen

Financial Wellness by Why The Health Not?™

Financial Wellness: A Key Ingredient To Whole Health

“Money can’t buy you happiness, but it can buy you spritzers, and spritzers make you happy.” We’re not sure who said that, but we agree that money can’t buy you happiness. Understanding how to be financially healthy, however, makes it easier to be happy. Don’t define your financial wellness by the average balance in your bank account. Measure it by your ability to understand how to make your finances work for you so you can achieve your life goals. Let’s be honest: Without a decent income or a cushion for savings or retirement, life goals are hard to achieve. And working toward them without a plan can be very stressful.

You Can’t Ignore Financial Wellness

The state of your financial wellness pillar will determine how strong or weak your other pillars of wellness are. It can also mean the difference between achieving all your wellness goals or obstructing your path to whole health.

Don’t Skimp On Professional Help

It’s never too early to seek the advice of professional financial planners. You may scoff at the idea because of the expected cost, but remember that one of the biggest concerns surrounding healthcare is the high cost of practitioners and care. Ignoring any one of the six pillars of wellness, especially the financial pillar, could turn a small problem that’s manageable today into a behemoth money pit in the future! It may even ruin us financially. So, let’s get prepared today.

Here’s a short list to gauge the state of your financial wellness. How prepared are you in these areas?

  • Does your income support your lifestyle?
  • Do you have an adequate amount tucked away in savings?
  • Is your debt low or high?
  • Are you planning for retirement?
  • Have you planned for medical or healthcare expenses?
  • Are you consistently budgeting to stay within your means?
  • Do you use tracking tools to achieve financial goals?
  • Are you planning for investments?
  • Do you have adequate financial education?
  • Have you secured privacy and identity fraud protection?
  • Do you have a college savings account?
  • Have you planned your family’s financial needs?
More Bang For Your Buck

Bankers, investment professionals, and accountants all specialize in maximizing the efficiency of your hard-earned dollars. Some of these services may be available through your bank and may be free to bank customers. Even a basic understanding of how to pay off your debt and reduce your interest rates could help you save for a home and balance your budget. Financial wellness starts here—and could get you on solid footing to build up your future.

Make A Timeline

Your goals here are simple: Think of your ideal lifestyle and do some research to find out what it takes to get there. Then create a timeline, a plan to move forward, including how much income you’ll need and how much to set aside for savings. Don’t forget about possible investments, the need for educational spending, and the type of career you’re best-suited for, in order to stick to your timeline.

Always Have A Backup Plan

No matter how hard you work to avoid foreseeable roadblocks, it doesn’t mean a hurdle can’t block your path from out of the blue. If it does, it doesn’t have to bankrupt you. Talk to financial planners about the best way to protect your earnings and assets. Shore up your financial wellness pillar and you may weather the storm relatively unscathed.

Eliminate A Huge Source of Stress

Grab the biggest source of stress by the horns by placing all your financial ducks in a row. This freedom will very likely improve your physical health, allow you peaceful sleep, an inclination toward careful nutrition and exercise—and help you afford access to proper professional care when you need it most. Emotional, social and educational wellness is improved also by reduced stress and anxiety as well as sleep, however, working towards financial wellness aides these pillars by giving you more self-esteem and confidence.

Wellness in this pillar boosts your other pillars, as well. And whole-person wellness is so much easier with that added self-esteem and self-confidence!

Take this quote to the bank:

“Permanence, perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstacles, discouragements, and impossibilities: It is this, that in all things distinguish the strong soul from the weak.”Thomas Carlyle
